Hamlet – The revenge of Prince Zi Dan
In 2005 the Shanghai Peking Opera Company put on a Hamlet performance for Kronborg Castle, and tickets sold out quickly. This summer the performance is back again – in the open air at the Shakespeare Festival.
With acrobatic stunts and choice comedy, Shakespeare’s Hamlet unfolds through Chinese singing, speech, mime, dance and acrobatics, and with the actors dressed in magnificent silk costumes and dramatic face masks. Forget everything about obtrusive psychology and dubious flights of fancy the drama here is raw and unadorned, and ‘Why’ has been removed from the equation.
Big stories know no cultural borders, and this is demonstrated in this performance – a bold, modern production from the renowned Shanghai Peking Opera Company, which puts on over 300 performances worldwide every year. This is a unique opportunity to experience the Peking Opera tradition in Denmark, in the open air at Kronborg Castle.
