Who we are
HAMLETSCENEN – DENMARK’S SHAKESPEARE THEATRE
A theatre where past and future meet
HamletScenen is more than just a theatre – it is a living narrative that constantly reinvents itself. With Kronborg Castle as its backdrop, we are the only theatre in the world rooted in Hamlet’s homeland, creating innovative stage art that moves, challenges, and inspires.
Shakespeare as you have never seen him before
For us, Shakespeare is not merely history but both present and future. His works contain timeless dilemmas of power, love, identity, and existence – questions that remain as relevant today as they were 400 years ago. HamletScenen brings Shakespeare into the 21st century through spectacular performances, where theatre, technology, music, and modern staging open doors to new experiences.
Theatre that pushes boundaries
At HamletScenen, we dare to think big and new. We blend classical theatre with digital scenography, cinematic elements, and interactive formats that engage audiences in fresh ways. We collaborate with international artists and directors to create performances that speak to both the heart and the intellect – always respecting Shakespeare’s spirit while keeping a keen eye on today’s audience.
HamletScenen at the frontier
HamletScenen is the theatre of the frontier – a place where realities, times, and perspectives meet and transform. Our productions are like theatrical cabinets of curiosity, where elements of nature, culture, technology, and human experiences are combined to explore the eternal transitions of existence. This takes place at one of Denmark’s most mythical and magical locations: Kronborg and the surrounding castle island.
Kronborg, situated on the outermost tip of Zealand by the Øresund Strait, provides the setting for HamletScenen and Shakespeare’s explorations of humanity’s existential dilemmas. Kronborg is not just a building but a symbol of power, conflict, and transformation, where the boundaries between land and sea, between the human and the metaphysical, are both visible and invisible. Here, at the intersection of past and present, Kronborg serves as a powerhouse reflecting HamletScenen’s engagement with the great existential questions: Life and death, reality and illusion, individual and collective.
HamletScenen is a theatre of transitions – places where something new can emerge, where change occurs. We work with transitions on multiple levels:
- Human and nature: The forces of nature – wind, water, light, and darkness – merge with human emotions and actions in our performances.
- Human and technology: Modern stage technology, projections, and interactive elements challenge the boundaries between the physical and the digital.
- Human and society: We examine how individuals navigate between their inner lives and the demands of society, just as Shakespeare’s characters do.
Kronborg functions as a mythical transition space where life and death, reality and illusion, and the individual and the collective are constantly challenged. Audiences move between outdoor and indoor stages, between the conventional and the experimental, experiencing theatre where transitions become both a physical and psychological journey.
A unique experience at the world’s Hamlet castle
Experiencing theatre at HamletScenen is not just a performance – it is a journey. With Kronborg as a historical backdrop, Shakespeare’s universe becomes physically present. The audience steps directly into the drama, where ancient walls whisper stories, and where stage art merges with the echoes of history. Kronborg’s majestic surroundings make every visit an unforgettable experience.
We create theatre for everyone
Shakespeare is for all, and HamletScenen is a theatre that reaches out. We develop performances that speak to both theatre enthusiasts, new generations, and international guests. From grand, spectacular outdoor productions to intimate indoor performances, workshops, and digital formats – we create art that engages, unites, and inspires.
