Echo from Venice

Echo from Venice

October 5th - 21th 2023

You can experience William Shakespeare’s immortal classic ‘The Merchant of Venice’ in a modern retelling by one of the country’s sharpest playwrights.

We meet Shakespeare’s original characters, who have wandered around Europe for 400 years. Bassanio, Antonio, Portia and Nerissa have all taken the long journey from the upper class to the lower class. They are trapped in their old fate; the pursuit of money, the oppression of women, a ‘secret homosexuality’ and a series of hopeless suitors.

Only the Jew Shylock knows the proper context of the matter and through him we experience the persecution of Jews in European history, the anatomy of oppression and the exclusion of those doesen’t fit in.
