Hamlet- Prince of Denmark

A GUEST PERFORMANCE AT SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL

Raised arms against a sea of troubles

On 5 september 1607, William Keeling, Captain of the ship The Red Dragon wrote in his journal: “We had the tragedy of Hamlet, and in the afternoon, we all went together ashore to see if we could shoot an elephant.” Few plays reflect the mystery of our soul as profoundly as Hamlet and it therefore seems apt, that one of the earliest recorded performances of Hamlet occurred at sea, as the myth prescribes. The dangerous environment of a 17th century sailing ship perfectly evokes the claustrophobic confines of Elsinore, which Hamlet so famously describes as “a prison.” An eventful and spell-binding tour-de-force with the sea as an active co-actor and opponent.
